South Arts Spring 2013 Art Classes!

South Arts has a terrific schedule of workshops and classes for Spring, 2013 with excellent Pittsburgh artists conducting classes in a variety of genres. Come as a first-timer or further develop your artistic talents by joining us at the Historic Schoolhouse in Bethel Park.



Exploring the Landscape in Pastel with Gail Beem

We will explore some different techniques of working with pastel to encourage you to be more daring and intuitive in your work—to be willing to step away from your reference and listen to your painting. We will do some shorter painting sessions each day to experiment and stretch our pastel muscles while exploring composition, design, value, and color. Each session will have a demonstration, a hands-on period, and a critique. Materials list upon registration. Tuesdays, April 16, 23, 30, May 7, 14. 10:00 a.m -Noon. Members - $60.00, Non-Members - $65.00.

Clothed Figure Drawing Sessions with Brian McDermott

This class will cover techniques and anatomy of the clothed figure. Instructor will give demonstrations and discuss ways to create stronger figure drawings. “Artistic anatomy” will be touched on. The instructor holds an MFA in medical illustration and is experienced in human figure drawing. Media used will be pencil and or charcoal. Drawings will be done from a “live model.” Thursdays, April 18, 25, May 2, 9, 16. 1:00 -3:00 p.m. Members - $60.00, Non-Members - $65.00.

Beginning/Intermediate Watercolor with Laura Lutton

In this relaxed class beginner to intermediate students will learn basic techniques of watercolor painting such as washes, shading and color theory—how to mix the color you want. Demonstrations by the instructor will help you learn painting techniques to develop your own style. Supply list sent after registration. Saturdays,April 13, 20,27, May 4, 11. 12:00 - 2:30. Members- $65.00, Non-Members - $70.00.

Drawing for the Absolute Beginner with Jack Puglisi

This class is for anyone who has always wanted to draw but has felt constrained by believing they had a lack of talent or ability. If you’ve ever said,”I couldn’t draw a straight line with a ruler,” this fun and informative class is for you. Pupils should bring a 9” x 12” drawing pad, 70 lb. white paper, two or more HB drawing pencils (good quality #2 will do), a grey, kneaded eraser, and a small hand sharpener. Other inexpensive materials may be required later. Tuesdays, April 2, 9, 16, 23, 30. 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. Members- $60.00, Non-Members - $65.00.

Watercolor Happy Hour Girls Night/Date Night Out with Laura Lutton

Come for these painting happy hours to paint and enjoy some refreshments. Use basic watercolor techniques and special washes to create watercolor scenes No prior experience is necessary. For all skill levels. Most supplies are included with the workshop fee. Students will supply brushes. Fridays March 15,  April 12, May 24. 6:00 - 8:30 p.m. Members -$20.00 per evening, Non-Members, $25.00 per evening.

Teen Watercolor Explorations Workshop with Laura Lutton

For the student expressing an interest in art with some drawing skills. Explore the basics of watercolor techniques in an interesting and fun class for teens. Some materials included. Sunday, April 14, Noon - 4:00 p.m. Members - $35.00, Non-Members - $40.00.

Friday Painters

This is a FREE open painting session for members with an instructor available to help you if you have questions or seek help with composition, color, techniques, drawing, etc. Bring your paints, whatever you are working on and join our happy group for a cup of coffee and refreshments. We would love to have you! Every Friday, 10:00 a.m. to approximately 2:00 p.m.
